LKA Game-Day Ready Tostadas

A Real Recipe That Builds Independence, One Layer at a Time | The Snack Kids Can Make Again on Their Own

Kids in the Kitchen is our blog series, where in collaboration with Click and Grow, we’re sharing Little Kitchen Academy recipes and tips for getting kids interested in food and involved in the kitchen.

These LKA Game-Day Ready Tostadas may look simple, but they represent something much bigger. Alongside you, your child will toast tortillas, mash avocado, season ingredients, and build their own recipe from scratch. Every step requires focus, precision, and decision-making, and it’s the snack kids can make again on their own.

Your child’s confidence isn’t built through praise alone. It grows through experiences where they’re trusted to do the work, solve problems, and contribute in meaningful ways!

The Snack Kids Can Make Again on Their Own

At home, recipes like this create moments you’ll remember: when your child walks into the kitchen, gathers ingredients, and starts preparing something for themselves without being asked. That’s when cooking becomes more than a skill… It becomes confidence.

Prep time: 45 minutes

Serves: 2

Ingredients

  • 2 small corn tortillas
  • 1/2 small ripe avocado
  • 1/4 small lime, juiced
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp pepper
  • 1/8 tsp cumin
  • 4-5 fresh sprigs cilantro
  • 2 tbsp sour cream
  • Pinch of chili powder
  • 1/4 cup pinto beans, drained
  • 3-4 cherry tomatoes
  • 20 g feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1 green onion

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.

Learning to work safely around heat is an important step toward kitchen independence. Invite your child to observe the process and discuss why we use the oven for certain foods and not others.

  1. Bake the Tortillas

Place the corn tortillas on a lined baking tray and lightly coat both sides with oil. Bake for 8-10 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

💡 Observe Together: Ask your child what changes as the tortillas bake. What do they notice about the color, texture, smell, and sound? Learning begins with observation.

  1. Prepare the Ingredients

Finely chop the green onion and cut the tomatoes in half. Set aside until ready to use.

🌱 From the Living Food Wall: Green onions are one of the many ingredients students can grow and harvest from our Click and Grow Smart Gardens. Harvesting ingredients before preparing a recipe helps children understand where food comes from and creates a deeper connection to what they’re eating.

If you have herbs or green onions growing at home, invite your child to harvest and add them to their tostada!

  1. Make the Avocado Spread

In a small bowl, combine the avocado, lime juice, salt, pepper, and cumin. Using a masher, continue until smooth and well combined.

💡 At Home Tip: Using a masher is purposeful work. It strengthens hand muscles, develops coordination, and helps children see how individual ingredients can be transformed into something entirely new.

The addition of cumin is a wonderful opportunity to introduce children to spices and how a small amount can completely transform a recipe’s flavor profile.

  1. Create the Chili Cream

Mix the chili powder into the sour cream until evenly combined.

Encourage your child to smell the chili powder before mixing. Exploring ingredients through sight, smell, touch, and taste helps children become more curious and confident in the kitchen.

💡 At Home Tip: Spreading and layering ingredients develops control, precision, and hand-eye coordination while giving children ownership over the final dish.

  1. Assemble the Tostadas

Place the crispy tortillas on a plate. Spread the avocado mixture evenly over each tortilla.

Sprinkle the chopped cilantro over the avocado layer, then spread the chili sour cream on top.

💡 At Home Tip: Spreading and layering ingredients develops control, precision, and hand-eye coordination while giving children ownership over the final dish.

7. Serve and Enjoy

Before taking the first bite, take a moment to admire the finished dish together.

Ask your child what they’re most proud of. Was it baking the tortillas? Mashing the avocado? Building the final tostada? Reflection helps children recognize their own growth and capability.

8. Bringing It All Together

These LKA Game-Day Ready Tostadas represent what we believe at Little Kitchen Academy: children are capable of more than the world often gives them credit for. When we trust them, guide them, and they rise to the occasion.

The child who learns they can make a meal for themselves today becomes the teenager who can feed themselves tomorrow, and the adult who gathers others around the table for years to come.
